Posters for a proposed installation on the complexities of urban loneliness/solitude in New York City. Alone in Proximity emphasizes the irony in one of the most populated cities in the United States also being one its the loneliest cities. Despite the New York health commissioner declaring an “epidemic of loneliness” in 2022, the shared experience of social isolation felt by 67% of NYC’s population goes largely unspoken. This installation would display artworks depicting this experience along benches in Central Park—an “exhibition for one”—promoting the acceptance and enjoyment of doing things alone, while simultaneously displaying that they are not alone in their experience.
